Phoenix Family partners with Chameleon Arts and the Francis Family Foundation to offer innovative summer Arts Program at Parvin Estates.

Drumline Summer Arts style For the 30 children in Phoenix Family’s Summer Program at Parvin Estates, this summer was a little different from previous years’. This year they got creative, thanks to Phoenix Family’s partnership with Chameleon Arts and the Francis Family Foundation.

The seven-week program began with an introduction to drumming circles, teaching the children simple rhythms and dances, and play with call and response percussion games. Each activity was geared towards building on the previous day’s activities, allowing each child to become comfortable with expressing him/herself through creative expression. "If I told you to draw a picture that reflects who you are, most of us would be intimidated," says Hugh Merrill, Executive Director of Chameleon Arts. "But if I told you to trace your hand and write in it, expressing yourself becomes less intimidating." The Parvin Summer Arts Program was led by a team of four artists ,who incorporated life and academic skills into their activities.

The program culminated with a community picnic and an artistic presentation to the Parvin Estates Board of Directors on Tuesday, July 18.
