Grant from George H. Nettleton Foundation Creates Lasting Impact

Posted on February 1, 2009

Nancy dreamed of the days when she could participate again in the daily activities provided by the service coordinator at the housing community where she lived. She missed going downstairs for the various wellness checks where she could get her blood pressure and glucose tested. She regretted not being able to pick up her mobile pantry groceries herself, instead asking that someone deliver them to her door. And she really missed the fun and enjoyment of the social activities, particularly the frequent card games between her neighbors and the trips to the “big city.”
Nancy did not participate in programs any more because she was too embarrassed. Recently, she was diagnosed with a serious gum disease and had to have all of her teeth pulled. Unable to afford the $1,000 expense for dentures, she began to withdraw – too embarrassed to interact with anyone. She felt uncomfortable talking with anyone and, if she did talk, she would cover her mouth and look away. Phoenix Family’s service coordinator was concerned about Nancy and talked with her about how Phoenix Family might help. Nancy just wanted to be able to talk with her friends again and enjoy the programs and services without feeling ashamed of how she looked.
Through a grant from the George H. Nettleton Foundation, Phoenix Family’s Senior Assistance Program helped Nancy’s wish to come true. In January, Nancy received a set of dentures. She is more active than ever and smiling ear to ear, showing off her beautiful new teeth.
