Volunteer

Let's be frank - we love volunteers!

We love volunteers

We love help. We pride ourselves on the wide variety of skills and experience in our volunteer pool. Most of our programs occur during weekday mornings and afternoons, so we are often looking for volunteers available during those times. However, we do have needs for all kinds of assistance including reading coaches, tutors, and website gurus, and crafters. We have a variety of unique programs at various times of the weekday (8:00 AM to 6 PM) — all of which need help — and the good news is that you get to help out with any program that fits your schedule!

Please note: the vast majority of our volunteer opportunities occur during the day or immediately after school, Monday through Friday. Right now, we are primarily looking for volunteers who are available during the weekday.

Here are just some of the areas where we need your help:

Reading Coaches
One coach + one child = infinite possibilities

Our Reading Coaches volunteer in our Reading Labs, giving children who are struggling to learn to read the one-to-one attention they need to build their confidence and help them catch up with their reading. The reading sessions are relaxed and fun and by working together, you can help give a child the vital skills they need to read, grow, and succeed. Reading Labs take place in the afternoon during the after-school program, Monday through Thursday. To fit your schedule, we have two shifts each day: 4:30 PM and 5:15 PM.

No previous teaching experience is necessary. However, all volunteers must attend an initial training session where we'll go over helpful tips & tricks, role-play our new skills, and talk about strategies for working with kids of different ages, skills, and needs.

Homework Assistance

Homework Assistance takes place in the afternoons at each of our communities Monday through Thursday. Because it is a homework-help program, you will sometimes get to flex your math and science skills, as well as your reading and writing muscles. Tutoring also offers the chance to volunteer at regular times and get to know a bunch of great kids.

Special Projects

At Phoenix Family, some of the best ideas for programs have come from our volunteers. If you have something in mind, we want to hear it! Drop us a line or give us a call (816.612.8843)
